RMF in Oceania

A French radio.
For the French in Oceania

From Sydney to Auckland, from Melbourne to Wellington, from Nouméa to Papeete — the radio that accompanies the French settled on the other side of the world, despite the largest time difference.

Why RMF in Oceania

Oceania, distant and francophone land

Oceania may seem far from France, but it hosts a historic and growing French community. Australia has around 30,000 French nationals, mainly in Sydney and Melbourne. New Zealand hosts 5,000, scattered between Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. And let's not forget the French territories of the Pacific: French Polynesia (300,000 francophone inhabitants) and New Caledonia (270,000 inhabitants) — which are not strictly expatriation, but which share French culture.

This French diaspora of Oceania is unique. It left far, often lastingly. For professional reasons (tech, finance, research, medicine), for the outdoor lifestyle, for family choices, or simply out of a desire for horizons. In Sydney, the French work in finance and tech. In Melbourne, in media and the arts. In Auckland, in digital and hospitality. These French have one thing in common: they live on the other side of the world, but maintain a strong link with France.

Listening moments

Après-midi local

Le matin de Paris

Mid-afternoon in Oceania, it's morning in Paris. For the French in Sydney or Auckland, this is the chance to listen live to morning columns: éphéméride, horoscope, the start of the Parisian day.

Local evening

Les chroniques quotidiennes

Evening in Sydney corresponds to mid-morning in Paris. For the French in Oceania at the end of their day, it's the moment to catch up live with Un jour dans l'histoire, Histoire, and all the daily columns.

Nuit locale

Weekend

Les escapades nature

A weekend in the Blue Mountains from Sydney, on the east coast of Tasmania, in the New Zealand Fiordland. RMF keeps you company during long road trips — Oceania is a continent of great distances, perfect for radio.

Vivre en Océanie

Expatriating, working, living in Oceania

Preparing to leave for Australia or New Zealand? Just arrived? Living in Sydney, Auckland, or Nouméa for years? Here are the main destinations for the French in Oceania — and how RMF accompanies you, wherever you are.

Moving to Sydney: the largest French community in Oceania

Sydney hosts around 15,000 French nationals, making it the leading French expatriation destination in Oceania. Tech, finance, marketing, hospitality, medicine — strong sectors abound. The French live mainly in the Eastern Suburbs (Bondi, Coogee, Maroubra), in Surry Hills, Newtown, or North Sydney. The work visa (482), Permanent Residency, and Working Holiday are the preferred routes.

Living in Melbourne: the French creative community

Melbourne hosts around 10,000 French nationals. Australia's cultural capital attracts creative, media, gastronomy, design, and cinema profiles. The French settle in Fitzroy, Carlton, St Kilda, and South Yarra. The city is regularly ranked among the most pleasant in the world — climate, cultural scene, cafés, gastronomy.

For the French in Melbourne, RMF accompanies daily life — between National Gallery of Victoria exhibitions and brunches in bohemian cafés.

Moving to New Zealand: Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown

New Zealand attracts around 5,000 French nationals, mainly in Auckland (the largest city), Wellington (creative capital), and Queenstown (adventure tourism). The country seduces for its exceptional landscapes, outdoor lifestyle, stable economy, and migratory openness. Cultural proximity with Australia makes it a complementary destination.

For the French in New Zealand, RMF is a daily thread with France — in a country where French culture lives mainly through gastronomy, wine, and fashion.

Living in Tahiti and French Polynesia

French Polynesia is a French Pacific territory, populated by 300,000 francophone inhabitants. Tahiti concentrates most of the population and economic activity — Papeete, Punaauia, Faaa. Mainland France regularly sends people on missions: teaching, civil service, health, research, tourism. The cost of living is high but the setting exceptional.

For the French in Polynesia, RMF is a daily connection with mainland France — between turquoise lagoons and Polynesian traditions.

Settling in Nouméa and New Caledonia

New Caledonia is a French South Pacific territory, populated by 270,000 inhabitants, the majority francophone. Nouméa concentrates the economy and administration. Mainland French come for professional missions (mining, civil service, health) or for the tropical quality of life.
